Interiors of Homes
Greater Cleveland Area Suburbs

All of the work James Todd, lead decorative artist of Dances With Walls, has done in these homes has come from referrals from satisfied clients. For each, he and his associate artists listen to what the homeowner feels is important -- be it the floor tiles, bed spreads, furniture patterns, window dressings or overall furniture style. Each client and home is different; therefore, each faux finish employed is different.

A large part of the challenge the artists love is creating something new and unique for each client. The techniques run the gamut from sponging and ragging to dripping and spattering. They have even used plastic bags, and often combines techniques -- like sponging and ragging -- to achieve the perfect look for a client's home. Sometimes they've used as many as four layers to achieve a finish. They can also glaze details in crown molding and woodwork, to lend historic appeal to a new home.

Faux Finishes

-- Faux finish in a master bedroom;
the owners wanted "something soothing"
Master bedroom faux work also includes glazing on the carved wood moldings and trims around the fireplace

-- Faux finish in a piano room,
plus glazing over anaglypta wallpaper
on the ceiling

-- more in the piano room

-- Faux leather finish
in a dining room

(sorry; different cameras)

Faux finish on a
vaulted ceiling --

-- Faux finish in a guest bathroom
James and fellow artist Chris Dugan painted this raised plaster grapevine motif. It was created by the local artist who originally owned the house in the 1930s.

Texture & Glazing
Plaster and glazing in a great room
-- Plaster and glazing of the great room
leads into the kitchen

-- Subtle glazing can bring out the beauty
of custom wood moldings....
particularly noticeable in the photo below
-- Another look at the glazing on the
woodwork surrounding the master
bedroom fireplace (see more above)

Faux Stonework

-- Faux stone and complementary
faux finish on the walls

-- A master bathroom.
Only the walls around the bath and vanities were finished with the stone lines -- as focal points -- the other walls have the same faux finish, with no stone lines.

(sorry; different cameras)

-- Left photo is an entry way, with
a few stones "etched" with words
(Read, Pray, Listen, Laugh, Dream...)

-- Right photo is a foyer

Faux Marble

-- Faux marble on upper molding and mantel, as well as faux woodgraining and plaster-and-glazing techniques on the walls
Plaster castings painted to resemble the actual, extremely complex pattern of the marble floors -- with mottled blacks, browns and tans and white veining.
Simple faux finish on pillars, meant to give the impression of marble
(also the photo below)
For more faux marble, see also the Faux Fusion page.

Faux Wood
-- Faux curly maple wood for former Channel 3 News set
-- Faux pine woodgraining on a door

James has painted much more faux woodwork -- including
plaster or drywall ceiling beams (textured & painted to resemble rough timber beams), doors, door jambs and window casings -- but unfortunately the pictures did not come out well, or he forgot to take photos.

For more faux woodwork, see also the Pickwick page
and the Metroparks Zoo page.

Murals

-- Flames in a garage

-- Ivy in a bathroom

James has done more murals in homes, but unfortunately we don't have pictures of them. One was of old-style playing cards revealing an Ace of Spades Blackjack, for a gentleman's game room.

For more murals, please see the Pickwick & Frolic page and
the Sullivan's page !
